Prism Glasses, Made to the Prism Values on Your Prescription

More Recommend:
Prism glasses are prescription eyeglasses made with a prism correction — the 'base in','base out,' 'base up' or 'base down' values your eye doctor writes when your eyes don't align on their own. If you're looking for the 90-degree glasses for reading in bed, those are a different product and we don't carry them. You'll need a current prescription from a licensed eye care provider that lists your prism values. Enter them at checkout and an Aoolia optician verifies every figure before your lenses are surfaced.
Choosing a Frame for Prism Lenses,Prism makes one edge of the lens thicker than the other — base out thickens the edge nearest your ear, base down thickens the bottom. Frame choice is what decides whether that shows.Full rim, every time. A rim hides the thick edge. Rimless and half-rim frames put it on display, and drilled rimless mounts are structurally risky with prism. We've filtered rimless and half-rim styles out of this page for that reason.Smaller lens width helps more than material does. A 50mm eye size carries far less edge thickness than a 56mm one at the same prism. This is the single biggest lever you have.High index thins the lens — but there's a trade-off.1.67 and 1.74 cut thickness, and also increase color fringing at the edges of your field of view, which prism already introduces. At 1–3Δ, 1.61 is usually the better balance. Above that, thinness tends to win.Adjustable nose pads matter for vertical prism. Base up and base down corrections depend on the lens sitting at the right height. A frame you can fine-tune holds that position.
What the Optician Check Actually Covers,Before a prism order goes to the lab, an Aoolia optician confirms four things: that the prism amount and base direction match what you entered, that the values are within what our lab can surface in your chosen frame, that your monocular PD is present — prism is far less forgiving of a rounded binocular PD than a standard single vision lens — and that your optical centers land where the prism was calculated for. If any of the four doesn't hold up, we contact you. Nothing gets cut on an assumption.

Frequently Asked Questions About Prism Glasses

Can I order prism glasses online?

Yes, if your prescription lists prism values and they're within our lab's range. You'll need a current prescription from a licensed eye care provider — we can't determine prism ourselves, and no online retailer should offer to.

Where do I find prism on my prescription?

It appears in its own column, usually labeled 'Prism' or 'Δ,' with a base direction (BI, BO, BU or BD) next to it. If there's no prism column, or it's blank, you don't have a prism prescription.

What's the maximum prism Aoolia can make?

__Δ per eye and __Δ combined. Above that, the lens edge becomes thick enough that comfort and optical quality suffer in a standard frame.

Will prism lenses look thicker than regular lenses?

On one edge, yes — that's how prism works. How visible it is depends on the amount, the frame size and the lens index. A full-rim frame at 50–52mm in a 1.61 lens handles a 2Δ correction with essentially no visible difference.

Do I need a different PD measurement for prism glasses?

Ideally monocular PD — a separate measurement for each eye — rather than a single combined number. Prism depends on the optical center sitting exactly where it was calculated for, so an averaged PD introduces error that a standard lens would absorb without you noticing.
